Matthew 10:40-42
“Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”
As a young person, I thought what could I do, or how could I help other people, as a Christian. I was fortunate to be surrounded by amazing Christian people. They were living out faith in so many ways and making incredible positive changes in their local church, and also in the wider society. I wondered, “Who am I? What have I to offer in my everyday living and Christian ‘mission’?” As a 15 year old, I felt quite daunted.
Until I read this teaching of Jesus – it sang deeply in my soul. A cup of cold water? I could do that. Wherever I was, with whomever I met, I could show welcome and hospitality, extending kindness and compassion. In this simplicity, we can practically share the love of God, our understanding of faith, and know that the living water of the Spirit will ripple beyond our simple act.
Our office is situated at Salvation Army Arndale. Each day, Christian volunteers extend simple hospitality, a welcoming presence, warming grace with practical assistance, either at the front desk, Food Bank, Shop or through accessing wider assistance. Offering the ‘least’ of God’s people the ‘most’ of God’s hospitality, wherever they are, with whomever they meet.
We live within the diversity of God’s people. We are connected through faith.
May we learn the ‘language’ of the people wherever we are. May we offer the simple act of recognition and respect for the other, listening to them and sharing faith with them. May we understand that there is always more to learn, and God will always teach us, as we journey together. Let’s start with the simplicity of loving hospitality,
Prayer – A Collect to Welcome the Day
I give today to you, Welcoming God,
as you welcome me to your beautiful creation.
Open my eyes to see you in each person.
Open my ears to hear you speak through others.
Open my heart so that I love unconditionally.
Open my soul so that your Spirit-song uplifts me.
Open my hands so that I offer welcoming hospitality.
Open my day’s pathway so that I live each moment,
Wherever I am with whomever I meet.
I give today to you, Welcoming God.
