Spirit & Life

Take Delight and Be Still

Psalm 37:1-11
Do not fret because of the wicked;
    do not be envious of wrongdoers,
for they will soon fade like the grass,
    and wither like the green herb.
Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    so you will live in the land, and enjoy security.
Take delight in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him, and he will act.
He will make your vindication shine like the light,
    and the justice of your cause like the noonday.
Be still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him;
    do not fret over those who prosper in their way,
    over those who carry out evil devices.
Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath.
    Do not fret—it leads only to evil.
For the wicked shall be cut off,
    but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.
Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more;
    though you look diligently for their place, they will not be there.
But the meek shall inherit the land,
    and delight themselves in abundant prosperity.

Reflection
Trust and hope are two words we have heard a great deal in recent times, and I am sure that they will be priority words in the election seasons ahead. They are not, however, developed on shallow promises nor fainthearted pledges. Imbedded deep in the soul, trust and hope grow from values grounded on love, truth, honour, covenant, justice, faith, and peace. The fractured nature of the last few years has played havoc with trust and hope. It has been a discombobulating and demanding time, where regularity and the ‘usual’ have been disrupted. This psalm speaks to us now.
Reset your focus. Recall God’s covenant. Delight in this certainty. Commit, trust, live in hope. Let God shine through you, and on the path of justice and peace. Let go of resentment. Be filled with love and kindness. Be patient.
Take delight. Be still.

Prayer – Missing You
When I stare at what’s around me, I miss you within.
When I focus on humanity, I miss your divinity.
Holding onto security, I let go of prosperity.
Worrying over others deeds, I trip over my own.
Awaken me.
Forgive me.
Shine on me.
Enfold me.
Comfort me.
Still me.
Call me.
Inspire me.
Strengthen me.
Revitalise me.
Direct me.
Walk with me.
In the busyness, I am still.
In you, I take delight.
