Scripture: Hebrews 13: 1-3
Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured
Reflection
Being alone is one thing. Being lonely is another. The pandemic experience has highlighted the significant difference between alone and being lonely. As a Chaplain, I saw repeatedly that one person’s pain was theirs to carry, yet they did not have to carry it alone. Our Christian faith speaks of the constant and steadfast love of God, a Presence in trouble and in celebration, a kind and listening Friend, and a gracious Companion on our journey. Throughout our scripture, we are reminded of this, and called to also be steadfast in our gracious love and care for others, as the people of God.
As we enter this wintery season of weather and soul, where many will be physically without, or feel isolated through poverty of heart, let us remember our steadfast commitment to be the hands of Jesus, reaching out and companioning with those whom we meet. In the day of their trouble, may we hear their prayerful cry of despair. When they have no words to express their burden, may we listen with the ears of the Spirit and see with the eyes of Jesus, and love with the gracious heart of God.
Presence, Friend, Companion
Prayer
Together, with the great cloud of witnesses and in our unifying faith, through scripture, we pray with those in distress, who cannot find the words…
Ps 86: 1-10
Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me,
for I am poor and needy.
Preserve my life, for I am devoted to you;
save your servant who trusts in you.
You are my God; be gracious to me, O Lord,
for to you do I cry all day long.
Gladden the soul of your servant,
for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,
abounding in steadfast love to all who call on you.
Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
listen to my cry of supplication.
In the day of my trouble I call on you,
for you will answer me.
There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,
nor are there any works like yours.
All the nations you have made shall come
and bow down before you, O Lord,
and shall glorify your name.
For you are great and do wondrous things;
you alone are God.
