Matthew 18: 21-35 (NRSV)
Then Peter came and said to him, “Lord, if another member of the church sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times.
“For this reason, the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him; and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt.

But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, ‘Pay what you owe.’ Then his fellow slave fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he would pay the debt. When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place.

Then his lord summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he would pay his entire debt. So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

Reflection
Letting go and forgiving from the heart seems one of the hardest human acts. The emotional pain often takes longer to heal than the physical pain. Its ‘unseen’ nature makes it difficult to identify, even by the sufferer, let alone for those who are not experiencing it. Its lingering leaves an unsettled presence that surfaces again at other moments when injustice occurs to you or to another whom you love. It will continue to be an unpleasant surprise until it is acknowledged, named and dealt with. Travelling through this process in prayer, with another trusted person or professional is a gift that will enable letting go and healing.

Forgiveness does not mean accepting unacceptable actions. Perpetrators often act as the slave in the story, with a sense of entitlement and inflated sense of their rights over another. Action reflects intention of the heart. The slave did not reflect the genuine unconditional love for our neighbour we are called to offer. A perpetrator cannot force forgiveness from you, as that in itself becomes another injury of enforced dominance. Nor is it our place to expect it from a person we have wounded.

God holds each of us with respect.
Forgiveness allows us to accept that respect we each deserve,
by identifying, naming, forgiving, letting go, so as heal the injury and move on.
It is an act of love, at the very heart of a faith filled life.

Prayer of Confession
Forgiving God,
Show us your way.
We are hurting from words and intentions of others.
They are like heaping coals on a slumbering fire in our hearts.
We do not always live in your presence,
nor feel that we are worthy of your love.
When demeaned or humiliated,
the wounding is compounded by our own low sense of self.
It is hard to let go…
In this space we offer to you these times…
Silent prayer

Forgiving God,
Show us your way.
Grow in us a resilience through faith
that all are welcomed in God’s family;
that we are welcomed in God’s family.
Prune away our sense of unworthiness.
Train in us the vine of love that reaches out to others,
Those that are hurting
and those who are hurtful.

Words of Assurance

Gracious One,
you encourage us to create peace-filled relationships;
you nourish our growing hearts with your presence;
you strengthen our living so we let go of what holds us back.
We are enriched to live in your way.
Thanks be to God. Amen

Prayer of Adoration and Thanksgiving
Forgiving and accepting Jesus,
who taught, lived and walked with so many different people,
you gave us a way of being together,
in all our diversity through the whole people of God.
You offered a consistency of love
and a way of expressing it.
We thank you for this insight of how to live with grace.
We thank you that, for all our different ways of worship,
of ministering and offering mission,
we each offer the gifts that we have to all your people,
and practice the presence of God in our lives.
Through faith and with love for others, we also grow. Amen

Commissioning and Benediction
Go out with a heart that is warmed by the love of God!
Be filled by with the fire of the Pentecost Spirit
So that you are able to connect with our family of God
as diverse as the Pentecost gathering.
Let us not be afraid to walk the road with Jesus,
and to learn to love all whom cross our path.
May forgiveness grow in our hearts
and judgment fall away from our being.
Go, with this gracious sense
that we are all welcomed and welcoming as the whole people of God.
May peace and hope fill your days, this week, and beyond. Amen

Romans 13:8-14 (NRSV)
Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet”; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, “Love your neighbour as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbour; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.
Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; let us live honourably as in the day, not in revelling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Reflection
When listening to music, a discordant note, out of tune or out of place, leaves an uneasy ripple in the continuing tune. Subtly, the trust of ‘pleasant harmony’ is disrupted, and often leaves the listener waiting for another sound ‘out of place’ rather than resting in all that remains harmonious. As churches together, are we singing in harmony with honourable love?
Paul urges us to be alert to our behaviour, to the different ways that are acceptable in society, and the ways that we are called to live as God’s people. A salient reminder, in church life, that this conundrum still continues centuries later! He brings living in the Way of Jesus to the nub of the matter, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’, in harmony with all God’s creation.

To those outside the church community, are we acting with honourable love?
Within our church, or within our own family and friends,
are we acting with honourable love?

Jesus speaks of ‘binding’ to the love that surpasses all earthly matters. He reminds us that when we gather, in joy or in difficulties, Jesus is there in the midst of us. Let us not be afraid then, to put on the harmony of honourable love which is laid before us.

Prayer of Confession
Songwriter of our soul,
we are saddened by our discordant ways.
We hear your lyrics of loving our neighbours,
and of enjoying harmony together;
about singing from the same song sheet
as one note in the many parts of Christ’s chorus.
And yet, in our fear of change,
our misunderstanding of coherence,
our unwillingness to sing in harmony
and with power of our own voice singing only one melody,
we drown out the gentle, simple constant message of your lyric:
Love your neighbour as yourself.
Sing deep in our soul, O Songwriter,
Because we long to hear the harmony of your creation
And delight in Christ’s chorus of many parts.

Words of Assurance

In Jesus, we hear a song that has been sung since time began.
It is heard in the laughter and delight
of God’s people sharing together.
The Spirit hums it deep in our soul
and Christ’s chorus always has a place for our voice.
For where two or three are gathered in Jesus name,
He is there in the very midst of our togetherness.

Prayer of Intercession as Churches Together
Healing Spirit, settle in our souls.
When our church has disagreements,
encourage us to listen carefully,
to hear your truth in the midst of differences.
There are many understandings and interpretations.
There are parts of the church needing adaptation and change,
and areas that need support and stability.
May we not crush an emerging ministry,
or let go of an essential expression of church.
May we listen fairly to each other,
and be witnesses to each other
in peaceful harmony and with just engagement.
Let us be honourable in loving our neighbour
And bonding ourselves to the Word of Jesus.

Romans 12:9-21
Love must be completely sincere. Hate what is evil, hold on to what is good. Love one another warmly as Christians, and be eager to show respect for one another. Work hard and do not be lazy. Serve the Lord with a heart full of devotion. Let your hope keep you joyful, be patient in your troubles, and pray at all times. Share your belongings with your needy fellow Christians, and open your homes to strangers.
Ask God to bless those who persecute you—yes, ask him to bless, not to curse. Be happy with those who are happy, weep with those who weep. Have the same concern for everyone. Do not be proud, but accept humble duties. Do not think of yourselves as wise.
If someone has done you wrong, do not repay him with a wrong. Try to do what everyone considers to be good. Do everything possible on your part to live in peace with everybody. Never take revenge, my friends, but instead let God’s anger do it. For the scripture says, “I will take revenge, I will pay back, says the Lord.” Instead, as the scripture says: “If your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them a drink; for by doing this you will make them burn with shame.” Do not let evil defeat you; instead, conquer evil with good.

Reflection
Throughout history, we see the strength and beauty of courageous, genuine unconditional love, changing the perspective of vengeful, reactive and cruel societies and diminishing injustice and evil ways, through renewing them to equitable, just and safe communities. We also see the waves of hate, disrespect, ignorance and arrogance crashing through the harmony and peace in God’s realm. It is at every moment, in every situation that we are called to be God’s people, from within ourselves, with family and friends and through wider community.
Let our love be genuine, a continuous inner strength that we passionately carry in all that we think, do and be. Harmony is fragile, and one discordant act changes the peace it brings. Let us not be overcome by malevolence, or add ‘burning coals’ to the oppressed. Hold fast to what is good, with our constant companioning God.
As we enter into the Season of Creation 2023, may we hear the hope God offers in Isaiah 43:19.

Listen carefully, I am about to do a new thing, now it will spring forth;
will you not be aware of it? I will even put a road in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.

Prayer of Confession
Jesus, friend,
We seek your strength.

When people attack and ridicule us, and we feel diminished and ashamed,
with irritation and hurt, we respond too quickly with words and anger,
Jesus, friend,
We seek your strength.

When cruel and damaging situations change our lives
and we burn with injustice and unresolved opportunities,
it is too easy to hold malice and anger in our hearts,
and look for times for a retribution in hate,
rather than a resolution in unconditional love.
Jesus, friend,
We seek your strength.

It is easier to join the throng of people rather than stand apart.
Too often we remain quiet , passive and fearful in times of injustice,
where we could work to bring your world of peace.
Jesus, friend,
We seek your strength.

We feel awkward and uncertain in what to do or say,
with people who are weeping or in deep distress.
When we have not experienced their pain,
we forget that it does not mean it is real and happening to them.
Our awkwardness and lack of insight too easily takes over,
and we remain emotionally short-sighted, silent and apart.
Jesus, friend,
We seek your strength.

It is easier to hold on to what we think is right, and refute change,
rather than consider carefully
challenging new ideas and differing perspectives,
even when this is at the detriment of other people or your wider world.
Jesus, friend,
We seek your strength.

In our comfortable house and warming clothes
for which we have worked hard,
we do not so easily see other’s anxiety and stress
or recall the lack of opportunity for many people.
Jesus, friend,
We seek your strength.

We forget you speak through the whole body of Christ,
And we are a part, not the whole.
Compassionate Jesus, we seek your strength.
Grow in our hearts the understanding of genuine love,
For we do not always see our way of being and living as your people.

Words of Assurance

When genuine love is in your heart,
compassion, peace, hospitality, understanding, and right living
come to you through the gifts of the Spirit.
We seek the Way of Christ
and the Breath of God’s Spirit
bringing winds of change into our lives.

Prayer of Adoration and Thanksgiving
We remember your miraculous love, O kindly God,
in so many ways throughout our days.
Through gentle folk across the years
who have listened and cared when we most needed it.
Through awe-inspiring wonders in creation,
and advances in science, technology, healthcare and farming practices.
Through collective groups that have actively worked for peace and justice
with inspiring courage and perseverance,
creating a better world through the ripples of what is right and true.
What a delight to have a breadth of understanding you gift to us,
O Spirit of Life.
How wonderful to learn of your Way of Living, Jesus Friend,
so that we can grow in genuine love, respect and wise thinking.
We cherish the harmony that sings through our daily life
when we are present with you, O God of all.

Benediction
Let us hear the words of St Paul again:
‘Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good;
love one another with mutual affection;
outdo one another in showing honour.’
So, let us go into the world with a spirit of peace,
with the strength of certainty
and the perseverance of living as God’s people.
God’s wisdom is spoken in our hearts,
Stirring in our souls, clarifying our thinking
And teaching us to live in a better way.
With the love of God, Creator, Advocate and Redeemer,
we, beloved, rejoice in God’s Word.
Let our love be genuine!

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.

Reflection
“Transformed by the renewing of our minds”. Such a great statement of how our faith inspires and ignites us to innovative and inspiring change! Revitalisation through the Pentecost Spirit; renewal of our thinking and perceptions through the Way of Jesus; and reconsidering our world view through God’s love, all draw us into active participation in God’s realm. Our faith is both individualistic and also calls us to be communal. It requires daily commitment, deep listening, heartfelt loving, courageous actions, as we participate in the vital expression of God ‘s love that we are called to live out each day.

Paul reminds us to celebrate our unity as God’s people that overcomes our diverse expressions of faith by reframing our uniqueness as part of the whole people of God. Our unity in our diversity is something to cherish and honour. This grace of inclusion and belonging is something we forget to celebrate all too often.

Why not celebrate the gifts that you see in others – their
foresight, encouragement, leadership, teaching, ministry, compassion and joyfulness?
Share your love by ‘seeing’ the other
and ‘naming’ their gracious gift they share in our faithful community.
Transform our faith filled people this week!

Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if one blind person guides another, both will fall into a pit.” But Peter said to him, “Explain this parable to us.” Then he said, “Are you also still without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles. For out of the heart come evil intentions, murder, adultery, fornication, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile.”

Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon.” But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, “Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.” He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.”
He answered, “It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.”
She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.” Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And her daughter was healed instantly.

Reflection
The mother is unwelcomed – a Gentile who has a child with a serious illness, which has likely brought shame to the family. She faces a group of men and a revered charismatic preacher alone, during the day, putting herself at risk of being seen as a woman of ill repute. She humbles herself before Jesus.
Yet, her actions make her intentions clear. She knows Jesus can, and will, heal her daughter. She will take the risk of danger, rebuke, shaming, humiliation, potential rejection and even accept the condemnatory ‘mantle’ of a dog. Her faith is so strong and her love for her daughter unwavering. She will risk all, for even a ‘crumb’ of just and compassionate assistance, because she believes in a loving God through the presence of Jesus. Her Courage and living faith in action, indeed.

Jesus explains that our intention, from out of the heart, is even greater than our religious practices, as they truly reveal who we really are. He raises that before the Pharisees. The woman lives it out, at great cost as she over-rides the societal boundaries of the day.

How do we express our intentions of our heart?
What does our attitude show?
What do we really say by how we act?
Our ‘living faith’ and our intentions are revealed everyday
through our loving and being, and our thinking and doing.

And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So, Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

Reflection
What wonderful words of comfort! Peter responded by doing what seemed irrational, but had his eyes fixed on Jesus. In difficult life circumstances, when it seem that we are in a rudderless boat, it is natural to feel that we are alone and afraid. Our faith reminds us God is near, but, like Peter, our hearts and minds are not always aligned, and we do not always feel God’s presence. Distracted by pain, whether it be emotional, mental or physical or even all the above, we focus on the ‘stormy waves’ and feel the ‘strong winds’ of fear buffeting us around.

Yet, quietly, gently, Jesus calls, ‘Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.’

What has buffeted your faith?
What helped you recall the nearness of God?
How can we assist others to hear the gentle voice over the storms and ‘strong wind’?

We are struggling, and often feel overwhelmed.
At times, when we are hurting most,
we do not have the words or courage to call on you.
When frightened, we often lose our way,
and feel that we are being subsumed by all the worries we are carrying.

Please call to us today,
for we are afraid, and find it hard to look to you.
In our painful times,
we do not have the courage to look away from the difficulties,
to the promises of your love.
Call to us, O gracious friend

Mathew 14: 13-21 (GNT)

When Jesus heard the news about John, he left there in a boat and went to a lonely place by himself. The people heard about it, and so they left their towns and followed him by land. Jesus got out of the boat, and when he saw the large crowd, his heart was filled with pity for them, and he healed their sick.
That evening his disciples came to him and said, “It is already very late, and this is a lonely place. Send the people away and let them go to the villages to buy food for themselves.”
“They don’t have to leave,” answered Jesus. “You yourselves give them something to eat!”
“All we have here are five loaves and two fish,” they replied.
“Then bring them here to me,” Jesus said. He ordered the people to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, and gave thanks to God. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. Everyone ate and had enough. Then the disciples took up twelve baskets full of what was left over. The number of men who ate was about five thousand, not counting the women and children.

Reflection
As a parent of little children, when fatigue was so great, sometimes a simple escape to the laundry to fold washing was luxury! It was not lack of love or commitment, but the realization that a simple step to the side enabled a ‘quiet time’ that offered a great deal.

Respite (withdraw, break the routine, a ‘short holiday’ refocusing on the positive)

Rest (even 10-15 minutes resets the brain, relaxes the body, lowers the heart rate)

Refreshment (a cuppa for nourishing the body AND the soul)

Renewal (breathing in with the Spirit, breathing out all that can be left behind)

This retelling shows the depth of Jesus’ pastoral care and ministry through his practice of seeking the lonely or ‘alone’ place, withdrawing by himself, and signally a need for rest. It is important to be alert to this need in our ministry and life, and respond. Jesus did. Sometimes, a short time is enough. Sometimes, a longer time is needed.

On seeing the crowd, Jesus was filled with compassion and reached out unconditionally, curing the sick and being present with the community. Jesus kept giving because he also sought the ‘alone’ space that gave back to him. It nourished his heart and soul, and his mind and body. While the disciples questioned every step, Jesus wisely found the lonely space, so he could continue to bless and break bread, ensuring abundance for all to eat and be filled.

This is a story of endurance in ministry, that enables love, gracious hospitality, abundant generosity and deep pastoral care, ONLY when we find our own respite, rest, refreshment and renewal. Where are we called to offer this abundance of love? How do we find the balance? Where can we assist others to practice selfcare?
Seek that ‘alone’ space, for respite, rest, refreshment and renewal,
so as to notice and respond, with unconditional and ministering love.

Prayer
When we are calling, you are there, O listening Friend.
When we are fatigued and drawn, you are seeing, O seeing Friend.
When we are saddened and down-hearted, you are caring, O loving Friend.
When we are sleeping and resting, you are watching, O compassionate Friend.

Our loving God,
we come as we are.
We call to you, in honesty,
tired from the week, fatigued by demands,
and longing for rest that will bring refreshment.
Come alongside, and let us know your presence,
O Comforter and Friend. Amen, Amen, Amen

Acknowledging Our Faith And Community Leaders
Churches Together SA recognises the commitment of all our Church and community leaders, in local Churches, state offices and agencies.
Reflection
Daily tasks and normal activities hold wonderful treasures we overlook. Too often we are focused on fatigue, responsibility, repetition, goals, plans and outcomes. We easily criticise what is not present or not meeting our expectations, rather than celebrate what is before us. It is too easy to miss the small miracles and great treasures. Our faith is so rich in valuing life that is here, today, now, before us. Our God cherishes the infinite and the infinitesimal. Heaven is present, and we are part of it. God’s realm is revealed to us if we see, notice, look deeper and keep alert. What are we valuing, and what do we miss? Is it the Master chef meal and fine dinnerware on which a meal is served, or the hospitality and meal itself that is significant? What is the pearl in our life with God? What small seed of joy helps reveal to you the great love of God? The beginning of faith and relationship with God, like yeast, permeates our days and grows richly so that we receive the Bread of Life.

Prayer – Gratitude For An Unusually Fine Treasure & Blessing
Giver of life,
We pray for the wellbeing of the web of life.
Pearls of great price appear before us,
revealing small miracles and great treasures
of such unique beauty and astonishing complexity.
The multifaceted busy life of fauna, companionable and collaborative.
The indefatigable life of flora that grows in both hostile and welcoming spaces.
The deliciousness of the nutritious food and fodder,
the usefulness of the treasures we find in the earth,
minerals, clay, sands, and stones.
These in turn, bring physical and mental wellbeing to other lives.
We are nourished and supported through the great web of creation.
We thank you for these wondrous gifts of life itself.
We pray that we continue to grow in appreciation of these gifts,
And support and sustain your creation, an unusually fine treasure.

Blessing
People of God,
Go forth with eyes open.
See the unusually fine treasures and the smallest gifts.
In your daily activities,
keep God’s blessings foremost in your heart and mind.
So that our faith grows
from seeded faith to flourishing life,
nourishing our soul and being a witness to others.

Go out with the Sower of New Life!
Feast on the Bread of Life!
Be comforted by the Spirit of Life!
Be aware of all that is before you.
Go in peace to explore all that life can be with God!

Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen!”
“Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.”

Reflection
There are many times in our life, where we hear things ‘as if for the first time’. Jesus speaks not only to new believers, but also to those who have heard the truth of God before. Often, we may hear it, or have even participated and flourished in our in faith and practices, but we have not imbedded it deep within their lives. The rocky soil of shallow joy and excitement, does not nourish us. Truth falls away from everyday life because the very basic values of faith are not adopted and understood in the soul. Just like seeds that grow in good soil flourish, when we commit ourselves to Jesus, allow the Spirit to dwell richly in our being, and love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, we continue to grow and flourish, even when the stormy times, desert experiences, and shadowlands cross our path. Just as the psalmist sings, let God’s way of living life be a warming light to our path. Let us incline our hearts to follow our Guiding One, and the Way of Christ.

Prayer of Confession
You scatter good things before us, O God,
We know that you sow seeds into our everyday life,
but we too often let them fall away before us on our daily path.
Our inner soul knows what is right,
but we often chose to ignore that truth
and be distracted by busyness or worries or following an easier path.
Forgive our inner short sightedness,
when really, we so long to live by your Ways.

We are sorry for the times we act unjustly, are unkind and hurt others.
We wish to act with justice and be bringers of peace.
We long to love with pure hearts, and let go of our mean and angry ways.
We search for truth and yet ignore your genuineness.
We want to understand, but ignore knowledge and fact,
and choose instead what is easier to accept
or what fits with our present understanding.
Hold us as we stumble on the rocky pathway we choose.
Guide us back to your pathway,
so that we flourish and grow as your people.

Words of Assurance
God’s light is shining. Let’s look up.
God’s hand is guiding. Let’s accept it.
God’s truth is revealed in the everyday pathway. Let’s look and listen.
For God is always near.

Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30
“Now, to what can I compare the people of this day? They are like children sitting in the marketplace. One group shouts to the other, ‘We played wedding music for you, but you wouldn’t dance! We sang funeral songs, but you wouldn’t cry!’ When John came, he fasted and drank no wine, and everyone said, ‘He has a demon in him!’ When the Son of Man came, he ate and drank, and everyone said, ‘Look at this man! He is a glutton and wine drinker, a friend of tax collectors and other outcasts!’ God’s wisdom, however, is shown to be true by its results.”
At that time Jesus said, “Father, Lord of heaven and earth! I thank you because you have shown to the unlearned what you have hidden from the wise and learned. Yes, Father, this was how you were pleased to have it happen.
“My Father has given me all things. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
“Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. For the yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I will put on you is light.”

Reflection

Let’s not miss the joy! Nor miss being comforted by the certainty!

Jesus highlights the very human attitudes that can so easily develop when we allow ‘religion’ to override ‘faith’. Nor lose sight of our being and belonging in the family God. It is too easy for practices to reflect judgement, myopic viewpoints and the contrary attitudes that comes with being ‘stiff-necked’ in our faith expressions. In so doing, we miss listening and learning, and most importantly, hearing God speak to us in so many unexpected ways. We miss the Wisdom of the Spirit being revealed to us, and lose the Way of Being to which Jesus calls us.
Jesus’ prayer highlights that personal and gracious love that comes to us as we share time in the care of our loving God. So many people are weighed down in so many unexpected ways. Layers of complication often are added to our already layered life. It is true that the unexpected simple things, as well as complex shock or sorrowing, become the ‘straw that breaks the camel’s back’. They are what often breaks down our resilience and joy, and seem the burden too much to carry, after being able to handle so much.

The Way of Christ focuses our loving and being, and thinking and doing.
Let us follow Jesus’ way to identify and lay down that which make the heavy burdens;
to take rest in the midst of the layers of life and responsibilities;
to learn through God’s gentle love, sharing and taking moments in the everyday;
to find rest for our soul.

Prayer
NB: Have a cuppa (hot Chocolate is good!), sit outside or in a quiet space, and enjoy a peace-filled moment with God

Warming Presence
Slowing in the midst of busyness, I take this time, O God,
to focus on the warming cuppa and share in this moment with you.
I give thanks for the time with you, O timeless One.
It is I who pack so much into my days that I miss you, and long for you.
You are never far away.
I give thanks for the warmth of the cup, O Warming Presence.
As I hold it, I am reminded that you hold me always.
It is I who step apart from our space together.
I give thanks for the sweet smell, rising in the steam, O Breath of Life.
I too often forget the simple joy of finding new life and sweet goodness,
in the simple act of breathing in freshness, and breathing out all that has passed.
I give thanks for sipping the comforting fluid, O Refreshing One.
Too often, I miss the precious life-giving nourishment in my quest for better or best.
This is the best, as it is now, here, present, in the sipping and savouring of the drink.
I give thanks for the life-giving energy, O Vital One.
As simply as drinking from this cup, you offer energising vitality when I most need it,
And it is there, to sip and savour every ‘mouthful ’at any moment in my day.
So, as I take time in this moment, feeling warmth,
breathing in sweetness of life,
breathing out, letting go of all that weighs me down,
I cherish the refreshing nourishment you offer,
And savour the renewing vitality, in this moment, in this cup,
with thanks, O gentle, humble Giver of Life, ever present, ever there. Amen
